Panama City, Panama

by Patrick on January 7, 2011

I’ve watched specials on the Discovery and History channel about the Panama Canal for as long as I can remember and I’ve always found it fascinating.  Check out this video of us flying over the canal and landing at Panama City’s downtown airport.

As you can see the landing was uneventful, but as with all international arrivals customs and immigration was a little more interesting.  We arrived on the ramp next to several airliners and were greeted by the inspectors.  They looked around confused as we unloaded our bags and then one gentlemen, that looked like a mad scientist, asked me for a $10 sanitation fee, no big deal.  The interesting part is after I paid him he proceeded to take an aerosol can and spray the inside of our plane with what smelled like a really strong bug spray.  Luckily we didn’t leave for two days so the plane was able to air out.  After this we proceeded inside the terminal for what is now becoming the typical customs merry-go-round from one office to another.  Amazingly these people make the US government look efficient.  Each office has two to three people in it, often sleeping, waiting on the one or two arrivals per day.  Did I mention everything is paper and pencil too, however they all seem to be very friendly:-)

Next best thing to being there. Thanks for having me along via the electrons. I can sense the fun, adventure, and excitement vicariously. You guys are cool, but then you knew that already.

$10 for a spray bath. Wow. Hope it kills the bed bugs that might be hitching a ride. 🙂
